Cassandra Holbert Elston, City Clerk

A wife, mother, grandmother and homeowner, Cassandra has lived in Calumet City for 26 years and, she is deeply, passionately committed to our community and helping people.
She began her public service career in 1979 as secretary to then Chicago Alderman Eugene Sawyer and became an Assistant Office Administrator when he was elected Mayor of Chicago.
In 2013, she was elected Thornton Township Assessor and was successful in helping hundreds of home owners reduce their taxes…holding taxpayer workshops… helping them file unfair assessments complaints.
A relentless advocate for public education, Cassandra has earned four coveted professional certifications herself.
She attended Byrant & Stratton Business College and Chicago State University and her commitment to life-long learning is evidenced by her winning the “Outstanding Service Award” from School District 149 in 2023.
Cassandra is an award-winning community activist– earning the Prestigious Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr “Spirit of Excellence Award” in financial leadership; “Elected Official of the Year,” by the Illinois Township Association, and the “Women’s History, Outstanding Community Spirit and Leadership” awards to name a few.
